The NARRA MULTIPURPOSE COOPERATIVE of San Manuel, Pangasinan, has grown through the years. We are now on our 11th year of operations this year 2011, and still growing bigger, to serve its members better. Likened to a “Narra Tree” sturdy and strong , named after its birthplace Barangay Narra , the Narra Multipurpose Cooperative (NMC) has definitely imprinted its name in the list of successful cooperatives in the province of Pangasinan, and in Region I.
Keeping up with the major concerns and purpose of the cooperative is not an easy task. In every endeavour , there is always an obstacle to encounter. There are a lot of issues to face, problems to solve, schedules to meet, projects and demands to comply. NMC is people-oriented, members and the community are the reasons or the why, we are existing as an organization. In simplier message -Narra Cooperative is people working for the good of themselves and the community.
Social Responsibility is the guiding rule of the NMC. This is the ideology that an entity be it an organization or an individual contribute or give back something for the welfare of the community where it exist. This is what exactly the cooperative has been doing since it began to operate in the year 2000.
Most of our cooperative members are farmers, production inputs were the prevailing problem. In response to these, NMC gave out fertilizer loans and production loans for land preparation payable on harvest time with minimal interest to the members. Then it set up a palay trading to buy the harvest from the farmers at competitive prices. By valuing its members, their standards of living is enhanced and raised.
When through the years (2004) the business of the cooperative has steadily grown with additional contracts, the cooperative address its social responsibility to the community. Projects for the senior citizens. Free medical and dental missions. Sponsored sports festivals. Co-sponsored fiesta activities. And more important, sponsored scholarship programs to qualified deserving students from the indigent families.
With more activities NMC employed additional manpower. Again members and employees were given added benefits, all members were enrolled FREE with Philhealth. Work benefits like cash incentives 13th month pay were provided. And in 2007NMC set up an organic fertilizer production plant, the thrust of social responsibility of the cooperative broadened to include caring for the environment. Included in the production of organic fertilizer are free seminars on organic farming, campaign for GO organic and Plant a tree for life. This was done years before the national greening program of the new administration was announced. At present the cooperative has set up a plant nursery with a modern world class Tissue Culture Laboratory to support the NGP program of President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III.
Also in line with caring for the environment and lessening the post-harvest loss of rice farmers, NMC established a modern Multi-Pass Rice mill that could give you 65% milling recovery from your well dried palay. Soon to be installed is a recirculating and a flat bed dryers to help out our farmers in their palay drying needs.
On March 24, 2007 NMC was acclaimed as one of the newest millionaire cooperative by the Cooperative Development Authority, during the Regional cooperative month held in San Fernando, La Union.
On October 24,2008, the NMC received the Award as Most Outstanding Enterpreneur in the field of Agriculture in Region I during the Ilocos-Pangasinan Development Council Meeting at Cabugao, Ilocos Sur.
Varied and multiple concerns handled by the NMC is not a real problem, because the cooperative is blessed with a very professional and able CEO and Chairman of the Board, VAdm Virgilio Q. Marcelo. And a working Board of Directors, a competent and service-oriented management staff and a team of loyal cooperators. -#-
