





Narra Multipurpose Cooperative (NMC), recently awarded as the “Most Outstanding Entrepreneur in Region I, Agriculture Sector,” embarks on a new business venture - an the establishment of a world class nursery.
“This is our commitment to the government’s green Philippines program as well as in the enhancement of food production,” says VAdm Virgilio Q. Marcelo, AFP (Ret.), NMC Chairman and CEO.
“In support to the government’s trust to accelerate rehabilitation of the country’s environment and natural resources, the Narra coop plant nursery (NCPN) will propagate not only fruit bearing tree seedlings for orchard plantation but forest tree seedlings and ornamental plants as well,” Marcelo said. Foremost among the fruit tree planting materials now being propagated are mango seedlings grafted with Guimaras mango scions. Guimaras mangoes are well-known as the sweetest among the Philippines mango fruits. “More important, we will soon produced tissue-cultured banana tubers as soon as our laboratory will be equipped with the needed equipment ,” Marcelo added.
Mr. Noe E. Peñera, NMC President and COO, is the concurrent project manager of NCPN. The environment friendly project is located in Brgy. Narra Sur, San Manuel, Pangasinan. It occupies A 3,500 square meter lot. It was inaugurated last September 21, 2008 as a birthday present to the NMC Chairman and CEO. Peñera said that the nursery is now open for business and ready to provide quality orchard and forest tree seedlings at reasonable prices. Ornamental plants such as santan, poinsettia and bougainvillea are also being propagated and will be ready for sale on time for household and school beautification ornaments this coming Christmas.
As stated by VAdm. Marcelo, the NMC nursery laboratory building is now being completed. As soon a laboratory technician will be available, the production and propagation of tissue-cultured banana tubers will commence. Aside from the laboratory, two net shades are also installed for the fruit and leafy vegetable production.
NMC is now applying for accreditation from the Bureau of Plant Industry as official propagator of tissue-cultured bananas, fruit and forest tree seedlings and vegetable planting materials.
