Still far from being affluent, NMC nevertheless, is proud to say that it “walk its talk.”
Local employer.  The crying need for employment, locally, is partly  being solved  by NMC. Records shows that it now employs more than 300 coop members and non-members. Priority employment are given to project affected persons (PAPs) in the construction of the giant San Roque hydro-electric dam. The workers are evenly distributed and assigned in the different revenue generating centers of the coop.

Boon to farmers.  Organized by farm workers, it is not surprising that Coop’s  first major project was dove-tailed to lessen production input of the farmers. The NMC Organic Fertilizer Plant located at Sitio Casantiagoan, Guiset Sur, San Manuel, Pangasinan was inaugurated by no less than DENR PENRO Wendy Co on June 12, 2007. With the establishment of the organic fertilizer plant which produces premium quality Bio-Advantage Pure Organic Fertilizer, the need of local farmers for low-cost effective fertilizer and soil conditioner was solved. This is also NMCs answer to the clarion call of the national government to promote bio-organic agriculture.
Modern multi-pass rice mill.  Aware of the  perennial  shortage of the national staple food caused not only shortage of irrigation facilities which could double or treble rice harvest but also of post harvest problems to include very low clean rice recovery of outdated rice mill facilities, NMC recently bought and set-up a  modernized multi-pass rice mill which will increase clean rice recovery of as much as 67% per 50 kilograms sack of palay.  The modernized double-pass rice mill is set to be formally inaugurated, today, July 9, 2011.

NMC SUPPORTS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
A busy day during one of the early test run of the modern rice mill
AFFLUENCE is the avatar of most business enterprises. In this material world, it would be the height of hypocrisy for one to say that he does not want to become rich.
Narra Multipurpose Cooperative is now a millionaire cooperative  but  it is yet far from being affluent. If through hard work and luck, it becomes very rich, it will stay the same “cooperative organized to provide service to its members and the community,” and will faithfully adhere to the cooperative’s principle to conduct its affairs “in accordance with Filipino culture, good values and experience and the universally accepted principles of cooperation.”
Glutinous rice production. Local farmers normally plant glutinous rice on a handful basis - barely enough to supply the need of “diket” especially during the feast of All Souls day where the offering of native rice cakes is part of the Filipino tradition of remembering their departed family love ones. Starting with the coming rice planting season, NMC will campaign for the planting of “diket” among   local farmers, especially the Coop members. A part of the campaign package is for the Coop to purchase the glutinous rice production of a much higher cost than the prevailing price of ordinary palay.

NMC college scholars.  It has been said over and over, that knowledge is power. That poverty is not a hindrance to education. Unfortunately the opportunity to go to school, especially to pursue a college degree  is  getting harder and harder. Aware of the importance of the matter, NMC
topped its social responsibility with its subsidy of 10 collegiate scholars  starting last school year.

NMC nursery.  The Coop also established a nursery for the propagation of high bred plant varieties. Located at Brgy. Narra Sur, tissue cultured lakatan banana plantlets, grafted mangoes, dwarf coconuts and other fruit tree seedlings as well as forest trees and ornamental planting materials are now being propagated . The Coop is in the process of registering the nursery to enable it to participate in the national government’s national greening program.

Human resource management. On its own self as a cooperative, NMC keeps abreast with the latest policies, trends and implementing rules of a cooperative. It encourage its senior staff to attend seminars to update their knowledge on the implementing rules and regulations of Republic Act No. 9520 otherwise known as the Philippine Cooperative Code of 2008. To insure the safety of its employees particularly the coop vehicle drivers in the performance of their duties, a traffic safety seminar was also conducted

Year-end Bonus. Annually during its general assembly meeting, NMC gives bonus to its employees. During its last general assembly meeting on December 28, 2010, NMC gave cash and  gifts in kind to its regular members. It also held a raffle draw where lucky members won and brought home additional Christmas bonus.
Recognition. It is heart warming to note that the government has recognized the social impact  that  this relatively young multipurpose cooperative  has created. On March 24, 2008, it awarded NMC as Most Outstanding Entreprenuer in the field of Agriculture in Region I during the Ilocos-Pangasinan Regional Development Council Meeting held at Cabugao, Ilocos sur.
Social responsibility.  Being a young cooperative, NMC should concentrate in doing business. But what NMC is presently doing conforms to the concept of social responsibility.
The Investopedia Dictionary defines social responsibility as “the principle that companies should contribute to the welfare of society and not solely devoted to maximizing profits.”
What propelled NMC to adhere to the concept of social responsibility?
Based on the  proposition  that the success of an organization depends largely on the management style of its leaders, a glimpsed of the background of the coop’s chairman and chief executive can  provide a veritable answer.

For a  newcomer  visiting Brgy. Narra, San Manuel, Pangasinan where NMC is based and where it is named after,  reading the inscription “Dedicated to the Youth - Hope for the Future” prominently posted atop the stage of the impressive covered  court of the Narra Elementary School, and upon learning that the covered court was constructed through the leadership of VAdm. Virgilio Q. Marcelo, AFP (Ret.), one thing will surely register on the mind of the viewer: the man who led in building the impressive edifice and adopting the school, providing it with facilities such as a school library complete with reference books and lately, a school hub, which are alien to most far-flung rural schools, is a selfless man who has a soft heart for the youth.

The presumption is no farther than the truth. Long before the NMC board decided to sponsor  an  scholarship grant to deserving but indigent students, VAdm. Marcelo has already a number of college scholars under his personal account. In fact one of them has already graduated from the college of engineering of the St. Louis University, Baguio City and has successfully passed the board exams for civil engineers. Two other scholars, one for an accountancy course, also from the St. Louis University, and another, a theology course, will soon finish their schooling.

For Brgy. Narra, its outstanding infrastructure facilities, as related, bear the handiwork of VAdm. Marcelo. It must also be noted that the faithful residents were given a special care with the construction of a multi-faith chapel where they are free to practice their faith and proclaim glory and honor to the Lord.   The lot where the barangay facilities, i.e., the barangay hall and the barangay health office and the barangay plaza which doubles as a recreation and commercial center (talipapa) also belongs to the family of  the Marcelos. The prime lots are being used the barangay  gratis et amore.  -#-
