One sure way of parrying the present global problem of food shortage is to increase food production. Both government and the private sector should come out strong and do their share to help. The agricultural sector must be given priority support to boost up food production.
Statistics show that one farmer supports 17 persons in terms of food and living allowance. If one farmer fails to do his job, 17 persons suffer and will be added to the list of malnourished and indigent members of society. If there are cases such as this, blame the high cost of producing food. Farm inputs has increased - seeds, fertilizers, pesticides are all very expensive nowadays. Meager government support cannot fully augment the needs of farmers. And payments to farmers for their produce are cheap, resulting in farmers going to indebtedness of loans for inputs from loan-sharks or farmers quitting the field and turning to other means of livelihood.
We at the Narra Multipurpose Cooperative (NMC) are in our modest way, doing our share to help the problems of our farmers. We have put up an organic fertilizer production plant (OFPP), at Sitio Casantiagoan, Brgy. Guiset Sur, San Manuel, Pangasinan. We are on our first year of operation producing Bio-Advantage Pure Organic Fertilizer and have steadily gone out “to serve” the communities of San Manuel and neighboring towns.
The OFPP does not only manufacture and distributes Bio-Advantage Organic Fertilizer - it also goes out to barangays and conduct seminars on organic farming.
When we talk of organic farming we talk of the natural ingredients as inputs; we discuss scientific method of land preparations; we discuss proper handling of seeds and seedlings; proper watering procedures; the right timing and kind of fertilizer to apply. As of to date we have conducted a total of 37 seminars to different barangays of San Manuel, Asingan, Urdaneta, Laoac, Sison , Villasis, Malasique and Binalonan.
Farmers’ response to organic farming is very, very positive. Going organic by using organic fertilizers have boost up their spirits in farming. They are convinced that Bio-Advantage Pure Organic Fertilizer serves as a soil conditioner, helps save the environment and cost-saving.
The selling price of organic fertilizers are very much cheaper compared to commercial fertilizer thus giving farmers more family income.
